What Is llms.txt, and Does a Local Business Need One?

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain-text file at your site's root that points AI agents to your most useful content. It's unproven for local businesses, and Google says its Search, including AI features, doesn't use it. Fix your profile, website and listings first.

What it is

The llms.txt proposal, published at llmstxt.org, describes a file at /llms.txt with a short summary of a site and links to clean, markdown versions of key pages. The idea is to make it easier for AI agents to find relevant content without wading through page layouts.

What Google says

Google's guide to generative AI search is direct: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities), as Google Search itself doesn't use them." It lists LLMS.txt by name.

Should a local business bother?

It's optional. A plumber or dental practice gains far more from:

• An accurate, complete Google Business Profile.
• Clear service pages that crawlers can read.
• Consistent listings on the directories AI assistants cite.
• A robots.txt that allows the major search and AI crawlers.

If those are done and your site platform makes llms.txt easy, adding one doesn't hurt. Just don't pay for it as an "AI ranking" service.

A quick test for any "AI file" pitch

Ask the seller which AI system officially says it reads the file, and for what. If they can't point to that system's own documentation, treat it as a guess.
