Answers / How AI Search Works

Does My Website Still Matter If AI Answers the Question?

Yes. AI answers are built from sources, and your website is the one you control. Google says its AI features follow the same SEO best practices as regular search and link to supporting websites. If your site doesn't explain what you do and where, the AI quotes someone else.

What to make sure of

If your site isn't backing up your Google profile, see how we approach website design for local businesses.

What we saw in one local test

In a September 28, 2026 test of a Vancouver, WA dog groomer we manage (nine searches, run twice), the business's own website was cited as a source in none of the AI Overviews that mentioned it. The mentions came from its Google Business Profile and third-party sites. That does not make the website unimportant. It means AI answers about local businesses lean on profile and directory data, so the website's job is to match that data and answer questions clearly. It is a small test on one business and should not be read as a rule.

FAQ

Can I skip the website and just use my Google profile?

You can show up on Maps without one, but you'll have far less for AI assistants to quote and far less to convince a customer.

How many pages do I need?

Enough to cover each main service and the area you serve. Quality matters more than count.
