Is It a Red Flag If an Agency Guarantees First Page on Google?
Yes. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. An honest agency can guarantee the work it does. It can't guarantee what Google or an AI assistant decides.
What Google says
Google's "Do you need an SEO?" page is blunt: no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and you should be wary of anyone who claims a special relationship with Google or a priority submission. Google decides rankings. Agencies don't.
What a guarantee usually hides
- Your business name. "First page" for a search of your own name, which you probably already have.
- A phrase nobody searches. Ranking for a long, odd keyword with no real demand.
- Ads, not organic results. Paid placement presented as a ranking.
- A refund clause with conditions you will never meet.
What an honest agency can promise
- A clear list of work, done on schedule.
- A baseline before work starts, so you can compare later.
- Monthly ranking data from across your service area.
- You stay the owner of every account.
That's the line we hold at CitedLocal: we guarantee execution, never rankings or AI recommendations.
The same goes for AI answers
Some agencies now promise to "get you into ChatGPT." No one controls which business an AI assistant names. What can be done is making sure the sources those assistants read about you are complete and consistent.
Rather not keep up with this yourself? That is what our Google Business Profile management covers.
FAQ
What if they offer a money-back guarantee?
Read the conditions. Most tie the refund to a keyword or timeline they chose. A refund doesn't give back the months you lost.
Is it a red flag if they guarantee leads?
Treat it the same way. Ask how leads are counted and who controls the phone number and forms they measure.
Can an agency guarantee AI recommendations?
No. No agency controls how ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI decides which business to name.
